How to choose the right grade

Four steps. Rework caused by the wrong grade costs far more than the oil itself.

Talk to an engineer
  1. Material

Aluminium, magnesium, titanium, copper, stainless steel or cemented carbide? This determines the base chemistry and whether a chlorine-free formula is needed.

  2. Machining method

Turning, milling, drilling, tapping, grinding, stamping or EDM? Each process has very different EP and lubrication requirements.

  3. Operating conditions

Oil temperature, pressure, central or individual supply, single machine or central system—these set viscosity grade and life expectations.

  4. Downstream process

Will parts be welded, painted or washed afterwards? This decides whether a volatile grade is appropriate or whether extra cleaning is needed.

Water-Soluble Metalworking Fluids FAQ

How often should cutting fluid be changed?

It depends on concentration maintenance and tramp-oil control. The magnesium-alloy water-soluble grade can last 3–6 months; with regular concentration checks and fluid purification, most water-soluble products can be run much longer. We offer periodic lab analysis to decide change-out timing by data.

Do your products contain chlorine or nitrites?

It varies by grade. The semi-synthetic cutting fluid is chlorine- and nitrite-free; the aero-engine cutting fluid is chlorine-free; the tramp-oil-resistant synthetic grinding fluid is nitrite- and mineral-oil-free. If your process has specific bans, tell us before ordering and we will recommend a compliant grade.

Which grade is recommended for high-hardness water regions?

The general-purpose micro-emulsion cutting fluid. It has good hard-water resistance and was designed for high-hardness water regions, suitable for 3C industry materials.

Do you have grades for difficult-to-machine materials such as magnesium or titanium?

Yes. Magnesium has a dedicated water-soluble cutting fluid with hard-water resistance and a stable, low-discoloration emulsion. For titanium and high-hardness alloys we use a chlorine-free water-soluble cutting fluid with strong lubricity and EP characteristics to extend tool life.

Neat Cutting Oils FAQ

How do I choose between chlorinated and chlorine-free cutting oil?

Chlorinated EP additives perform better under heavy loads for cutting and grinding medium- and high-alloy steels. For industries with chlorine restrictions—such as some medical and aerospace parts, or where welding or sintering follows—choose a chlorine-free grade. Tell us the material and downstream process and we will give a clear recommendation.

Are there dedicated oils for tapping and deep-hole drilling?

Yes. Tapping oil is a high-EP formulation (40 °C viscosity 95–105) for threading and rolling stainless steel and high-alloy steels. Deep-hole drilling oil has a tough oil film for difficult-to-machine alloys. Neither should be replaced with a general-purpose cutting oil.

Can oil mist and odour be reduced?

Yes. High-flash-point and low-mist formulations are standard across our neat-oil range; the micro-mist/MQL oil is specifically for spray or near-dry systems. If mist is still high on site, it is usually a delivery-method or flow-rate issue—an engineer visit will identify it.

Anti-Rust Oils / Rust Preventives FAQ

How do I choose between inter-process and long-term storage protection?

Inter-process protection usually ranges from days to a few months: dewatering rust preventive (3–6 months) or water-based rust preventive (0.5–1 month, dilutable 3–10 times) are sufficient. For long-term storage or outdoor equipment use hard-film rust preventive, rated up to 24 months.

Can I apply rust preventive directly onto parts that are still wet?

Use a dewatering grade. Dewatering rust preventive contains special additives that quickly remove surface water and is intended for inter-process protection. Applying an ordinary rust preventive over wet parts can trap moisture underneath and cause rust.

Is the protection period guaranteed?

The periods listed are reference values under normal indoor storage. Actual protection is strongly affected by packaging, stacking, humidity and contact with corrosive media. For export shipping or high-humidity environments we recommend verifying with a salt-spray test first—we can help.

Can you provide test reports?

Yes. Our headquarters operates an in-plant laboratory with salt-spray testers and other equipment. Products are also tested by institutions such as the Guangdong Dongguan Quality Supervision and Inspection Centre. Reports can be provided according to project requirements.

Hydraulic Oils FAQ

Is a 3–5 year change interval really achievable?

The long-life anti-wear hydraulic oil can reach 3–5 years provided the system is well sealed, oil temperature is controlled and periodic oil analysis is carried out. Severe water ingress, dust contamination or chronic overheating will shorten this; we recommend deciding by test data.

What is safe for hydraulic systems near high heat or open flame?

Water-glycol fire-resistant hydraulic fluid HFR46. It is fire-resistant and meets Factory Mutual requirements, usable down to –40 °C, with anti-wear and lubricating performance comparable to mineral oil—specifically for hydraulic systems near high heat or flame.

Which grade for outdoor, cold-region or large temperature swings?

High-low-temperature hydraulic oil. It is designed for outdoor, cold-region and large-temperature-swing severe conditions, using high-VI base oil and a zinc-free anti-wear formula that protects copper and silver parts.

Why is the oil turning milky/white?

Water ingress. Our products have good demulsibility and hydrolytic stability and separate quickly from water, but you should still investigate cooler leakage, breather water ingress and condensation, and drain water regularly.

Can it be mixed with the equipment manufacturer's original oil?

At change-out we recommend flushing or at least draining the old oil thoroughly. Mixing different formulations can affect additive performance, especially zinc and zinc-free anti-wear packages. Consult us before mixing.

  • Open gears (ball mills, rotary kilns) require extra heavy-duty open-gear oil; do not substitute enclosed-gear oil.

Gear Oils FAQ

How do I choose between heavy-duty and synthetic gear oil?

Look at oil temperature and environment. For oil temperatures up to 110 °C and normal conditions, heavy-duty gear oil is sufficient; it exceeds CKD and DIN 51517-CLP standards and is certified AGHA 250.04. For long-term temperatures above 120 °C, pour point below –40 °C, complex disassembly, severe environments or extra-long change-out intervals, choose synthetic gear oil.

Will the oil fail in heavy humidity or salt-water conditions such as ports and ships?

Heavy-duty gear oil separates water quickly and inhibits acidic by-product formation. It performs well in severely humid or salt-water ingress conditions such as ocean freighters and ports, effectively preventing micropitting. We still recommend protecting breathers from dust and draining water regularly.

Can open-gear oil be used directly on enclosed gears?

No. Open gears run slowly, are exposed and subject to dust and water, requiring extra heavy-duty open-gear oil (ISO 3200/6800) with high viscosity, water/dust resistance and adhesion. Enclosed gear oil would be thrown off and provide no protection.

Can one gear oil replace worm gear oil?

Heavy-duty gear oil can replace worm gear oil, medium-duty gear oil and conventional heavy-duty gear oil, reducing oil grades in stock. However, if the worm gear set has a specific factory-specified oil, confirm before changing.

Long oil life, high quality, outstanding water separation to prevent moisture contamination, maintain mechanical performance and extend machine life.
  • Low-speed stick-slip and chatter marks usually point first to way-oil viscosity and lubrication condition; way grinding should only be considered afterwards.
  • Spindle oil viscosity grades are low (ISO 2–22). Do not substitute hydraulic or way oil.

Way Oils / Spindle Oils / Circulating Oils FAQ

The machine chatters at low speed and parts show chatter marks. Is it the oil?

Way oil is a common cause. Stick-slip at low speed is usually related to way-oil viscosity and film strength; premium way oil resists stickiness and has strong adhesion to suppress stick-slip. But if the ways themselves are worn or scored, oil alone will not fix it—an on-site check is recommended first.

Can spindle oil and hydraulic oil be interchanged?

Not recommended. Spindle oil viscosity grades are low (ISO 2–22) and emphasize detergency, anti-foam and non-varnishing; it is listed by machine-tool builders as a recommended maintenance oil. Hydraulic oil has different viscosity grades and additive systems; mixing can affect spindle temperature and life.

Way oil and cutting fluid mix and turn white. What should we do?

Way oil has good demulsibility and separates quickly from water; it does not easily emulsify. If whitening occurs on site, it is usually related to cutting-fluid concentration, pH or tramp-oil load. Check concentration and improve skimming.

Can circulating oil be used in a vacuum pump?

Large turbine vacuum-pump circulating systems can use circulating oil; for vacuum pumps where process water enters the pump, choose vacuum pump oil, whose water-separation and sealing characteristics are more suitable.

Fast bright quenching oilSlightly yellow transparentGood cooling speed while keeping parts bright after quenching. Long service life. Used for hard-to-harden materials such as low-carbon steels where a bright surface is required.
Vacuum quenching oilSlightly yellow transparentShort distillation range, extremely low saturated vapour pressure, strong oxidation resistance and low volatility, easy to evacuate. Very high flash and fire points for safe use; good oxidation stability with low sludge formation. Long service life; also suitable for martempering and temper-hardening applications.
  • For low-carbon, hard-to-harden materials requiring bright surfaces choose fast bright quenching oil; for vacuum furnace processes choose vacuum quenching oil.

Quenching Oils FAQ

Can ordinary quenching oil be used in a vacuum furnace?

No. Vacuum quenching oil requires a short distillation range, very low saturated vapour pressure and easy evacuation. Ordinary quenching oil would volatilise heavily under vacuum, spoiling vacuum levels and contaminating the furnace.

How can we eliminate the descaling step after quenching?

Choose fast bright quenching oil. It forms a protective film that keeps parts bright after quenching, reducing oxidation and decarburisation, so the descaling step can often be skipped.

Does cooling speed change as the oil ages?

Yes. Oxidation by-products can alter cooling characteristics. Our products have strong oxidation resistance and low sludge formation, but we still recommend periodic sampling and cooling-curve testing; change-out should be decided by data.

This is usually caused by high-volatility fluid. Our EDM fluid is produced by vapour-phase synthesis with minimal fume and odour, non-irritating to skin and the nervous system, and has a high flash point for safer use.

Which grade should be used for mirror-finish moulds?

Choose mirror-finish EDM fluid. Its ultra-high dielectric stability and strong debris flushing ensure uniform discharge, preventing white layers and micro-defects while protecting fine electrodes.

Can electrode wear be reduced?

Yes, provided discharge parameters and the fluid are matched. EDM fluid promotes fast debris removal and prevents secondary discharges, effectively reducing graphite or copper electrode wear.

  • For no-wash processes that go straight to welding, painting, bonding or lamination, choose the volatile stamping oil.

Stamping & Drawing Oils FAQ

If parts need welding or painting after stamping, does oil residue matter?

Yes. For these downstream steps choose the volatile stamping oil. It evaporates completely and leaves no residue, so no wash step is needed. If you are still using a non-volatile oil, an extra cleaning stage—and wastewater—will be required.

We keep getting cracks in difficult deep-drawing. Can changing the oil fix it?

Start with the oil, then check the die and blank-holder force. Our difficult-drawing grade is free of sulphur and chlorine active components and has the lubricity to support large drawing ratios; but if die radii, clearances or blank-holder force are wrong, oil alone cannot solve it. We recommend an on-site review before deciding.

High-performance heat-transfer oilRecommended for closed heat-transfer systems with long-term use below 300 °C.Made from hydrocracked synthetic base oil and dedicated chemical additives. Suitable for closed heat-transfer systems with expansion or pressure-relief equipment; better service life and heat-transfer performance than general mineral heat-transfer oils.
Synthetic heat-transfer oilRecommended for electronics materials, petrochemicals, copper-clad laminates, coatings and resins where high stability is required.Special synthetic high-temperature heat-transfer oil with unique detergent-dispersant and high-temperature performance. Proven by thermal-stability testing to run continuously at 310 °C and handle instantaneous film temperatures up to 340 °C. Oxidation resistance is 8–10 times that of mineral oil; unique molecular structure prevents sludge during effective service life. Especially suitable for systems without nitrogen-sealed expansion tanks.
  • The first selection criterion is long-term operating temperature; the second is whether the expansion tank is nitrogen-sealed.
  • Coking is usually caused by overheating and insufficient flow. Periodic carbon-residue and acid-value testing is cheaper than changing degraded oil after the fact.

Heat-Transfer Oils FAQ

What is the difference between long-term operating temperature and instantaneous film temperature?

Long-term operating temperature is the normal oil temperature in the system; instantaneous film temperature is the short-term high temperature at the heater wall film and is usually much higher than the bulk fluid temperature. Synthetic heat-transfer oil can run continuously at 310 °C and handle instantaneous film temperatures up to 340 °C—both figures must be considered.

Can synthetic heat-transfer oil be used if the expansion tank is not nitrogen-sealed?

Yes. The unique molecular structure of synthetic heat-transfer oil prevents sludge during its effective service life, making it especially suitable for systems without nitrogen-sealed expansion tanks. Mineral heat-transfer oils oxidise faster in such systems.

How can coking and line blockages be prevented?

Control overheating, ensure adequate flow, and choose a grade with good anti-coking cleanliness. Both high-performance and synthetic heat-transfer oils emphasise detergent-dispersant and high-temperature properties to keep heaters and pipe walls clean. For already coked systems, clean before refilling.

How often should heat-transfer oil be tested?

Under normal conditions sample and test carbon residue, acid value, viscosity and flash point at least annually. Systems running long-term above 300 °C should be tested every 6 months; use the data to decide whether to top up or change out.

R&D

R&D and Testing

We have worked in parallel on lubrication, cleaning and corrosion prevention for over 20 years. That work lands in six concrete product dimensions; the assurance layer is a laboratory that can generate its own test data.

Six core technologies

Pushing the limits of long-wear performance—six technologies that reduce wear across the whole operating cycle.

  • Friction reduction

Built for high loads; forms a tough oil film under extreme pressure, lowers the friction coefficient and keeps wear risk low.

  • Corrosion protection

Provides a long-lasting barrier against moisture, acids, alkalis and corrosive media, preserving metal finish and strength.

  • Detergency

Disperses and suspends sludge, carbon deposits and other contaminants so the lubrication system stays clean and parts stay clean too.

  • High-temperature stability

Resists oxidation and thickening in long-term high-temperature service, preventing fluid degradation and deposit formation so equipment keeps running.

  • Safety and environment

Formulated to meet environmental and occupational-health standards, helping customers run safe and cleaner production. Products comply with RoHS.

Custom formulation

When standard grades do not fit, we formulate to order. Three typical situations:

Send a brief
  • Compliance replacement

The current product contains chlorine, nitrites or mineral oil and is restricted by a customer or export market. We replace it with a formula of equivalent performance.

  • Process matching

Special materials such as magnesium, titanium or high-hardness alloys, or extreme conditions such as high temperature, high humidity or high pressure, where standard grades are close but not close enough.

  • Grade consolidation

The workshop is running more than a dozen brands, procurement and stock are chaotic, and the customer wants to consolidate to a few grades that still cover every application.

Custom development needs sufficient sample volume and lead time. We will first tell you honestly whether it is worth doing.

Support

Support

A traditional lubricant supplier delivers oil on schedule. Suola installs a simple management loop in your plant: continuous supply, on-site purification, periodic testing and an engineer on the floor when something goes wrong. Cost is comparable to conventional supply; the difference is engineers and test data.

Custom formulation: ten-step service flow

From the first site visit to routine laboratory testing, the loop is closed. Each step has a clear deliverable—no empty promises.

  1. Site review

An engineer visits, inspects machine conditions and understands your requirements.

  2. Proposal

We deliver a service solution with cost budget and benefit analysis.

  3. Lubrication plan

Equipment oil charts and lubrication posters are provided for direct use on the shop floor.

  4. Delivery

Delivered by Suola's own sales team, on time and directly to your door.

  5. On-site startup guidance

A technician guides the first fill and mixing ratio when our products are first used.

  6. Oil change service

Technicians come on site to replace and refill oil for you.

  7. Record keeping

A fluid-use file is built for each customer to prevent sales errors and track history.

  8. Comprehensive assessment

Engineers propose preventive improvements for your equipment.

  9. Fluid purification

If oil is contaminated by water or particles, engineers treat it on site and test key parameters.

  10. Fluid testing

Oil indicators are tested periodically so you know fluid condition, contamination level and wear-metal trends.

Where the savings come from

Money, management effort and labour—three areas with concrete benefits.

  • Lower total cost

Longer oil-drain intervals and longer equipment life directly reduce lubricant consumption and major repair or replacement costs. Hidden costs are controlled and unplanned downtime caused by sudden failures is minimised. One supplier covers every oil need, with no buck-passing.

  • Easier management

Our certified engineer team takes on lubrication technology and management responsibility, sharing your technical load. Less waste fluid is generated, cutting disposal cost, equipment investment and maintenance labour.

  • Less strain on operators

Avoid frequent repair and emergency work caused by poor lubrication; reduce change-out downtime and improve productivity. Stable production quality means less rework. Cutting fluids without unpleasant odour make a better shop-floor environment.

Factory-direct supply, no middleman margin

The traditional chain is manufacturer → distributor → wholesaler → dealer → customer, with a margin and credit/ inventory buffer at every layer.

Suola supplies directly from the factory to the using plant. Part of the saved margin is passed to the customer; the rest is invested in engineers and the laboratory—that is where we prefer to spend money.

  • Factory direct

Oil storage and safe use

Print this section for your warehouse and shop floor. Many "oil quality problems" actually start in storage and handling.

  • Oil storage

    • Do not store drums upright in the open air; moisture and contaminants can enter.
    • Store indoors upright with the bung on top for easy dispensing.
    • Tighten bungs and keep drums sealed.
    • Keep drum bodies and labels clean and legible.
    • Keep the floor clean so leaks are spotted quickly.
    • Maintain stock records and use first-in-first-out.
    • For frequently drawn oil, place drums on a rack with a tap-controlled outlet.
    • Keep new oil and waste oil separate; never put new oil into a container that held waste oil.
  • Usage precautions

    • Consult an expert, use the correct lubricant grade and minimise the number of oil types in use.
    • Label each machine with the parts to be lubricated, oil name, fill interval and responsible person to avoid using the wrong oil.
    • Before filling, clean oil pumps, cans and tools.
    • Use dedicated containers for each oil and mark the container with the oil name to prevent contamination.
    • Before changing oil, flush the machine with solvent; never use water-soluble cleaner for this.
    • Keep equipment maintenance records after each oil addition or change.
    • If oil appears abnormal or a change interval is reached, send a sample to a professional laboratory for a decision.
  • Oil safety

    • Store oil in a dedicated area with no combustible materials nearby.
    • No smoking or open flames in the oil store.
    • Provide at least two fire extinguishers.
    • Do not accumulate oil-soaked rags or waste that could spontaneously ignite.
    • Store flammable speciality oils or chemicals separately and mark them clearly.
  • Environment and health

    • Never discharge waste oil directly or pour it into soil.
    • Collect waste oil in dedicated containers and hand it to a licensed recycler for proper disposal.
    • People with sensitive or broken skin should avoid direct contact with lubricants.
    • Do not wear oil-soaked clothing or put oil-contaminated rags into pockets.
    • Do not wipe oil off skin with dirty rags; metal chips trapped in the rag can abrade skin and cause infection.

Drum-opening cards are included with each delivery for 200L steel drums (58.5 × 88.3 cm) and 18L plastic drums (30.5 × 37 cm); contact us for the electronic version.

Ways to work with us

From product supply only to fully managed lubrication services, depending on what the plant actually needs.

Talk about our situation
  • Standard supply

Quotation by grade and factory-direct delivery. Suitable for plants with stable oil needs and strong in-house fluid management.

  • Selection + supply

An engineer conducts an oil-use health check, optimises grades and ranges, then supplies against the agreed plan. Most customers start here.

  • Managed lubrication service

Includes on-site guidance, oil change service, record keeping, fluid purification and periodic testing. Suitable for continuous production lines without a dedicated fluid manager.

Why customers switch to Suola

Changing oil is risky: people worry about part quality and line stoppages. Customers usually switch suppliers not because of price, but because their previous supplier did not show up when a problem happened.

  • Engineers come to site, not just email a TDS.
  • Our own laboratory generates test data; reports are not queued behind a third party.
  • One supplier covers cutting, rust prevention, hydraulic, gear and other oils, reducing procurement and inventory pressure.
  • No obligation if the proposal does not fit; first consultation and site review are free.

FAQ

FAQ

General questions answered here. Product-specific questions are covered on each product page.

Selection

How do I know which grade to use?

Look at four things: workpiece material, machining method, operating temperature and downstream process. Give us those four items and an engineer will give a preliminary direction the same day. If anything is unclear we will ask before recommending a grade.

We have been using imported oil in our machines for years. Can we switch to Suola?

In most cases yes. We first review the technical indicators of the current oil (viscosity, EP type, chlorine content) and then propose a substitute. We usually recommend a one-month parallel trial to confirm that part quality and tool life do not drop before switching fully.

Our workshop uses more than ten brands of oil. Can they be consolidated?

Usually one-third to half can be consolidated. This is a typical "unified oil" custom requirement; the benefits are simpler purchasing, lower inventory and reduced risk of using the wrong oil. An engineer needs to do an oil-use inventory first.

Can you send samples first?

Yes. Small samples are usually sent in 5L containers; machine-scale validation is arranged by actual volume needed. Samples may be chargeable or free depending on grade and quantity; this is clarified during discussion.

Supply and delivery

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No hard MOQ. Small packs of 5L, 18L, 20L and 25L can be ordered by the single container; 200L steel drums and 1000L IBC totes are arranged by actual volume. Volume pricing applies to larger quantities.

What pack sizes are available?

5L, 18L, 20L, 25L, 200L and 1000L. The 200L steel drum measures 58.5 × 88.3 cm; the 18L plastic drum measures 30.5 × 37 cm. Drum-opening instructions are included with each delivery.

How do you ship and how long does delivery take?

Delivered by Suola's own sales team, not passed to a third party. South China is usually fastest; East China shipments are sent from Kunshan or Wuxi. Specific lead time is confirmed by address before you place an order.

Can you issue invoices and what are payment terms?

We can issue special VAT invoices. Payment terms are agreed according to the ordering entity's credit and cooperation history and are written into the contract.

Use and maintenance

Is the oil-change interval fixed?

No. The interval depends on operating conditions (oil temperature, load), system cleanliness, and whether water or dust is entering. We recommend deciding change timing by test data, not by calendar—this is exactly why we offer fluid testing.

Why does cutting fluid smell bad or turn white?

Bad odour usually relates to low concentration, tramp-oil build-up or long standstill, and sometimes the biocide system in the formula. Whitening usually means way oil or wash water has entered. Start by checking concentration and pH, plus skimming and filtration; most cases improve from there.

Can oils of different brands be mixed?

Not recommended. Mixing zinc and zinc-free anti-wear packages, or chlorinated and chlorine-free cutting oils, can affect additive performance. When changing oil, drain or flush the old oil thoroughly first.

Can you send someone to site when something goes wrong?

Yes. This is one of the main differences between us and trading-only suppliers. South China and East China can usually be covered on site; for remote locations we diagnose remotely first and dispatch only when necessary.

Testing and compliance

Can you provide test reports?

Yes. The headquarters operates an in-plant laboratory with kinematic viscometers, pour-point testers, density meters, salt-spray testers and oil-water separators. Products are also tested by institutions such as the Guangdong Dongguan Quality Supervision and Inspection Centre. Reports can be provided per project, and we can also arrange testing at a customer-specified agency such as SGS.

Do products have environmental certifications?

Yes. Products comply with RoHS environmental standards. The company is certified to ISO 9001 Quality Management System and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and has been named a China Green Environmental Product.

Can you support export orders?

Yes. The company established an export department in 2025 and can provide MSDS, COA and export packaging as required. Please tell us the destination country's regulatory restrictions in advance so we can recommend compliant grades.

Can you formulate to our requirements?

Yes. The three most common requests are compliance replacement (e.g., chlorine-free, nitrite-free), process matching (special materials or extreme conditions) and grade consolidation. Custom development needs sufficient sample volume and lead time; we will first tell you honestly whether it is worth doing.
